“Inequality is much harder to bear in a liberal democracy because one has only oneself and one’s inadequacies to blame for one’s poor social standing. […] The more we believe that liberalism has been actualized, the more we believe that our society provides us with equality of opportunity, the more we believe that there is a fair starting gate for all, the more difficult is to deal with the fact of inequality. Of course, it could be argued that liberalism is bogus, and that the ideal of equality of opportunity has not or cannot be attained, or that it can only be partially realized. For the most part, liberal society is painfully aware of this, and therefore invents schemes by which the conditions that justify inequality can be actualized.”

Drury, S. Leo Strauss and the American Right, p. 164.

Drury, naturalment, no diria tant. Potser perquè això seria concloure públicament quelcom massa semblant a allò que suposadament pensen aquells que ella tant critica.
